Do you qualify for a House Choice Voucher?

The Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program plays a crucial role in providing secure and cost-effective housing options for low-income, disabled and elderly households across the country. But, there are steps you must take to demonstrate you qualify for a voucher.

Getting on the waitlist is just the first step – when you get to the top of the list, you’ll have to show that you qualify for a voucher. Qualifications are set by HUD and are managed by MHA. While you don’t have to gather your eligibility materials in advance, knowing the qualifications and how to demonstrate them can help the voucher approval process move quickly. And ultimately, that means you could be on the path to housing stability sooner! So, what are the qualifications? Check out the list below.

What are the requirements to qualify for an HCV?

  1. First, you need to be a U.S. citizen or an immigrant with eligible status.
  2. Next, you have to show that you need housing based on how much money you make. Your income must be less than half of the median income for the City of Memphis. Your income is how much you make before taxes are taken out. The team at MHA can help you see if your income qualifies.
  3. We don't just look at income, we also look at your family size. HUD takes into account the size of your household when determining eligibility. Generally, larger families have higher income limits than smaller households. As you wait for your name to come off the waitlist, it's helpful to get your banking and job information in order. Then, MHA will connect with those entities to verify your income before we extend a voucher.

Based on the above requirements, you can determine whether or not you qualify for a Housing Choice Voucher.

The HCV application is currently closed. If you are on the waiting list, please keep your information up to date and continue to check your email. We will reach out to you when a voucher is available. If you’re not on the waitlist but would like to learn more about public housing and upcoming voucher availability, follow us on Facebook.
