How to update the information on your Housing Choice Voucher application

One of Memphis Housing Authority’s most frequently asked questions is, “What happens if my information changes after I submit my application and am placed on the waiting list?

If you are currently on the waitlist for Public Housing or a Housing Choice Voucher, it is your responsibility to notify MHA when your income, family composition (the number of people who live with you), employment status, address or phone number change.

For HCV applicants, these changes must be reported in writing by completing an application update form. These are available in the client portal and can be completed online! But, they’re also available at the reception desk of our Central Office at 700 Adams Avenue in Memphis. If you complete a paper form, you can leave it in the locked drop box located in the lobby, or scan and submit it to our online portal

Public Housing applicants must visit the site manager of the property where the original application was taken or submitted via MHA’s online portal. The appropriate forms must be completed and delivered to the site manager.

An important note: No applicant updates can be taken over the telephone. This is for your safety – we cannot verify a caller’s identity or information as easily over the phone, and we want to make sure any changes to a family’s application are accurate. Please do not call to make changes to your information.

How to use MHA’s online portal: In the upper right hand corner of this webpage, click the “Applicant Login” link meant for those on the waitlist. Then, use the email address you provided when you created your account to log in. Within the portal, you can do almost all of the things needed for program compliance. You can fill out important documents, submit proof of employment, leave messages for your care team and much more. The portal is by far the best way to find answers to your questions, submit information and connect with our team.

Failure to report any changes could make it difficult for us to reach you when your name reaches the top of the waitlist and may cause your application to be purged – or taken off – the list. If that happens, you will have to reapply for Public Housing or HCV assistance – meaning it will take longer to access housing or assistance.
