Memphis Housing Authority Awarded Emergency Housing Vouchers as Part of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021

On March 11, 2021, President Joe Biden signed the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 into law  which provided over $1.9  trillion in funding relief to address the continued impact of the -COVID-19 pandemic.  As part of the COVID-19 relief package, $5 billion in funding was provided to direct Emergency Housing Vouchers (EHVs) to Public Housing Authorities  (PHAs).   On May 10, 2021, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced the allocations to eligible PHAs.  Memphis Housing Authority (MHA) was awarded 190 EHVs.  The EHVs will be available beginning July 1, 2021.

The EHVs are being provided to help assist individuals and families in the following categories (1) homeless, (2) at risk of homelessness, (3) fleeing, or attempting to flee, domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking, or human trafficking, or (4) recently homeless and for whom providing rental assistance will prevent the family’s homelessness or having high risk of housing instability.   The verification that an individual or family meets one of the four categories will be conducted by the local Continuum of Care agency.  The CoC will refer eligible individuals or families to MHA for final eligibility for an EHV.

MHA is currently working with the local Continuum of Care agency to develop the eligibility and referral process for the EHVs.  MHA will provide additional information regarding the eligibility and referral process on its website in the coming weeks.
